Online Gambling

Online Gambling is the act of playing games of chance for money online. This can include casinos, sports betting, online slots, in-play betting, and virtual poker. It also includes a wide variety of promotions and bonuses.

Online gambling is becoming increasingly popular in recent years. In 2008, the gross revenue from online gambling surpassed $21 billion. The online gaming industry has grown dramatically in the last five years.

As more and more people access the internet, there has been a growing concern about how the Internet may be used to provide illegal gambling to Americans. In addition, state officials have expressed concerns that the Internet could be used to bring illegal gambling into their jurisdictions.

The problem has become more widespread over the past five years. Although the Internet provides an easy way to gamble, unregulated gambling websites can take advantage of players and leave their personal information vulnerable.

A number of federal criminal statutes are implicated by illegal Internet gambling. These statutes include: Laundering; Tax Evasion; Bookmaking; and Sports Betting.

Several attacks on the government’s power to enforce federal laws on gambling have been made on the basis of the Commerce Clause and the Due Process Clause. However, these arguments have proven to be ineffective.

Moreover, the presence of an interstate element in the Internet frustrates enforcement of state law in many cases. For example, a person who uses an Internet casino to engage in unlawful gambling in New York State is liable for violating the Travel Act.
