Poker is a card game of betting, deception and skill. It is most commonly played with a standard deck of 52 cards (although some games use multiple packs or add a few wild cards). The object of the game is to have the highest ranking hand at the end of the deal. To do this players place chips into a pot, or \u201cbetting interval\u201d according to the rules of each particular poker variant. Players may choose to raise their bets or even fold their cards. If a player chooses to raise, the other players must match his amount or call his bet.<\/p>\n
In the early days of the game, betting was based on a narrow range of combinations – pairs (two cards of equal value), three of a kind, and the top hand, ‘full’ – four of the same rank. This form of the game was documented in the reminiscences of two unconnected witnesses, Jonathan Green in his 1836 book Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling, and Joe Cowell in his Thirty Years Passed Amongst the Players in England and America (1829).<\/p>\n
As betting became more common in poker, the game developed into a more structured competition. Today, tournaments are held worldwide. The smallest tournaments, known as locals or weeklies, are small-scale events that bring structure to friendly, social gatherings in bars, card rooms and community centers. Larger tournaments are often held in hotels, casinos and other venues.
