It is a global industry with thorough regulations that differ by country. Online gambling is not only a form of entertainment but also an activity that can lead to serious harms, including addiction. It is important to know how online gambling can affect your life, what treatment options are available and what steps you can take to help yourself if you think you may have a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are over 85 countries that offer legal online gambling. This includes casino games, sports betting and daily fantasy sports, as well as poker and lottery-like games. In addition, a growing number of virtual gaming sites offer \u201cskin betting,\u201d where players wager virtual currency on the outcome of various events in video games. While these games may seem harmless enough, they can be addictive and can cause financial problems, depression, social isolation and even health issues such as insomnia and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The causes of gambling-related disorders are complex. Many factors contribute to an individual\u2019s susceptibility, including genetic predisposition. A recent twin study by Xuan et al found that about 50% of the variance in gambling behavior is moderately heritable. Other influences include environment, psychological stress and relationship conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment options for gambling addiction include therapy, support groups and medications to manage underlying mental health conditions. Behavioral therapy is especially effective and can help individuals change the harmful patterns of thought and behavior that perpetuate their addiction.
