Poker is a card game in which players wager chips (which represent money) on the probability of making a particular hand. There are many different poker games and variants, but all of them involve betting and a showdown with the best five-card hand. Poker requires a certain amount of skill, and even though luck is involved, the ability to read your opponents can give you an edge in winning the game.<\/p>\n
During a hand of poker, a player is dealt two cards face-down and a fifth card is placed on the table in the middle (“the flop”). Each player then makes a bet by placing chips into the pot (the amount of money that all players contribute to the pot for each deal) according to the rules of the game being played.<\/p>\n
After the flop, the player with the highest five-card hand wins. Depending on the poker variant being played, some players may be allowed to draw replacement cards for the ones in their hands.<\/p>\n
The most common poker tells include shallow breathing, sighing, flaring nostrils, blinking excessively, watery eyes, a smile hiding a nervous expression, and an increase in pulse seen in the neck or temple. A player may also place his or her hand over the mouth or shake it as a sign of being nervous or bluffing. The most reliable poker tells, however, are betting patterns and timing.
