Many people play because they enjoy the thrill of a potential big payout, but there\u2019s something else going on that\u2019s less obvious: the fact that lotteries are helping to perpetuate a myth of meritocracy in a nation with deep income inequality and limited social mobility.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s a deeper reason for this behavior: The prevailing belief that states need money and that gambling is inevitable, so we might as well legalize it and promote it as a way to raise revenue.<\/p>\n
The purchase of a lottery ticket cannot be accounted for by decision models based on expected value maximization, as the cost exceeds the expected payoff.
