Poker is a card game in which players wager money against each other. The game has many variants, but all share certain core elements. A poker hand consists of five cards. The value of a hand is in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency, with the more unusual combinations ranking higher. Players can bet that they hold a superior hand, and other players may choose to call (match) those bets, raise them, or drop out of the round entirely. Players can also bluff, and the player with the best bluff wins the pot.

Players put down forced bets called buy-ins before the game begins, usually an ante and a blind bet. A non-player is often assigned dealer responsibilities, and that person shuffles the cards and deals them to each player. The first betting round begins once all players have 2 hidden cards, which are known as a player’s hole or pocket cards.

Three more cards are dealt face up in the center of the table, and there is another betting round. These are called the flop, turn, and river. A player with pocket 7’s that show on the flop would be considered to have the nuts, as this is the best possible hand at that point. However, if other players have two hearts on the turn and river, you will no longer have the nuts. Eventually, all remaining players reveal their cards and the player with the highest-ranked 5-card hand wins the pot.
