Poker is a card game played with money or chips. It involves skill and strategy, but mostly chance. Players place bets on the outcome of a randomly distributed set of cards, with different ways to win including bluffing. It is one of a family of games, some of which are card-stud, that have an element of chance, and are generally considered to be a type of gambling.

The rules of the game are largely defined by the cards, and are based on the principles of probability, psychology, and game theory. While the outcome of a particular hand of Poker is significantly dependent on chance, in long-term play a player’s actions are based on their evaluation of expected value and other strategic considerations.

Each round of Poker begins with a betting interval. During this time, each player must either call (match) the bet of the previous player or drop out of the pot. When the betting interval ends, there is a showdown, where all remaining players reveal their hands. The player with the best Poker hand wins the pot. In some cases, the winner also wins a share of the chips that have been placed in the pot by other players.

In addition to the standard betting intervals, some Poker variations require additional bets known as blind bets. These bets occur before the players are dealt their cards, and may be replaced with an ante. In some cases, the player must raise the bet to stay in the pot, or else fold.
